Dear Parents / Carers.

Your children might have been pestering you to use their bike or scooter to get to school this morning! This is because we have entered a national school competition, The Big Pedal, which promotes active travel to school. In order to win we need to get as many bikes and scooters to school as possible and encourage our children to travel in an active way t0 school to promote a healthy lifestyle! If we were to win as a school, we will win some great prizes! It was great to see 15 bikes and 11 scooters this morning on our bike racks! If you have signed your child up for tomorrow’s cycling skills sessions by signing  form with myself, please send your children with a helmet so they can take part in the fun! Below is a link to a flyer for the project Get Balby Moving, promoting some great opportunities to get active in the local area this summer!

23.3.18 – Northern Ballet is just one reason to celebrate!

It has been a fantastic week for sport at Balby Central!

15 children were spotted as part of a project we were involved in through Northern Ballet in Leeds. The children shared what they had learnt in the sessions with their families and had a tour of the building. The girls and boys then had a surprise from the professional dancers at the company who performed a piece from Swan Lake. The children did the school proud and showed determination, passion and enthusiasm. Congratulations and thank you for your hard work. You were amazing!

To top of a busy Thursday, our Boys A team brought the cup home, winning their tense final against Woodfield 1-0, with Carlos scoring the winner! Man of the match went to Josh for a solid all round performance! Well done boys! You thoroughly deserved the win and have become fantastic role models for the school!

Pictures and highlights to follow. We hope your children enjoy celebrating Sports Relief today and that you all have a restful Easter holiday!

19.3.18 – Football update and Sport Relief

It has been another busy half term for football fixtures. Our Y3/4 boys football team hosted Crowle and although they conceded early goals, fought back very well in the second half to score 4 goals, with the match ending 4-10 to Crowle. An excellent effort against a strong Crowle team. Meanwhile, our Y5/6 boys A and B teams have been competing in a local football league and as we reach the final week of fixtures, the A team are strongly placed in second with a chance of reaching the final! KS1 were lso very lucky to get a visit from Donny Dog on Thursday morning, who was encouraging children to attend school with a competition to win free Rover tickets!

This week we are taking part in Sport Relief at school, kicking off with a fun assembly this morning. Each afternoon children will be completing fun active challenges as part of their Active1 15 to help promote physical activity. This will end in a celebration on Friday when children are invited to wear their PE kits, favourite sports shirt or dress as a their favourite sporting hero! We would appreciate any donations made on Friday morning (recommended £1) that will go towards Sport Relief 2018!!

Thanks for your continued support on the touchline,

Mr Wilson

9.2.18 A great first Half Term!

Just a quick round up of recent fixtures and results! Our Boys Football First Team lost a close game last night at home to a strong Crowle side, 3-4. There were some solid performances with plenty to work on before the Y5/6 A and B teams play league fixtures next half term. On the playground, The Snedkars won the Y4/5 Netball tournament, beating team Fire in a close final and the Illiminators took the Y6 Football League title. Y3 and y4 kicked of our 2018 inter-house sports competitions on Wednesday afternoons, braving the cold to play hockey. All pupils represented their house and played 3 matches. Currently Team Tornado top the House leaderboard! Well done Y3/4!

Elsewhere, we have had more fun cycle maintenance workshops for Y5 children which they thoroughly enjoyed, learning how to change fix tyres, brakes. and gears. Letters have gone out to invite children to take part in cycling skills sessions and Learn to Ride sessions. Please return letters on the first day back if you are interested. We also had a great display of Mixed Martial Arts from the children taking part in the Wednesday afterschool club with ACMAC, showing off some great patterns. Next half term children can look forward to a KS2 gymnastics competition, more inter-house sports competitions and football and rugby fixtures against other local schools.

Thank you to all children, parents and carers for their continued support and enthusiasm for PE!

It has been a great start to the Spring Term! Our Y4 girls football team competed in the South Yorkshire Finals last Tuesday afternoon and did very well to come 6th place! In testing cold and snowy conditions the girls played together superbly as a team and never gave up. Thanks go to Miss Wales for her efforts as the girls football coach and to all the adults who braved the weather to support their child at the event. Well done girls, a great achievement!

Y5/6  children were lucky enough to take part in a cycle maintenance workshop last Tuesday, learning vital skills for the future. They all engaged well in the sessions and later all children benefitted from an assembly promoting cycling as a form of physical activity. On Tuesday 6th February, it will be the Parents and Carers turn to take part in a maintenance session! Letters will be sent home tonight to invite you all to join Tom, the local Cycle Officer, to come and learn for yourselves how to maintain bikes and provide your child, and yourselves, with the chance to ride bikes safely. If you are interested, please return the forms to the office by 31st January. It is a great free opportunity to engage in physical activity and win some prizes whilst taking part!

Many thanks,

Mr Wilson

21.12.17 – Great end to 2017!

It has been a great end to the first term at Balby Central celebrating Christmas and we have even managed to fit in a bit of sport! Last week our KS2 dancers put on a great show for parents and carers showing off their great routines they have worked tirelessly on over the past half term. This was accompanied by Balby Voices who sang beautifully! Big thanks go to Mrs Hodgson, Miss Eaton, Miss Bedford and all the volunteers involved to help prepare!

On the playground, intra-school sport has been getting tense with some cracking finals! Alfie and Jacob took the Y5/6 Badminton title in a close contest. Meanwhile team Tornadoes were crowned Y4 basketball champions, in a tense victory over team smash, 4-2. More to look forward to tomorrow morning, with the Y3 Football final kicking off at morning break time (The Powers V Footdown) and our badminton champions take on their biggest challenge yet, Mr Mynett and Mr Short.

Many thanks to all the children involved over the last term in all sports and physical activity in and outside of school. Special thanks to all staff working hard at clubs and parents for your support at fixtures. We look forward to continued success and participation in 2018! Merry Christmas!

4.11.17 – Talented dancers and further football success!

Another busy couple of weeks for PE and sport at Balby Central. Year 4/5/6 children were fortunate enough to take part in a ballet workshop last Monday with the Northern Ballet school. All the children tried their best and enjoyed the chance to take part in an activity which was new to many. Many thanks to Mrs Hodgson  for organising the visit and a huge congratulations to those children who have been invited along to additional sessions! We clearly have some very enthusiastic and talented dancers!

Last Wednesday a group of Y3/4/5 pupils travelled to Badsworth  primary school for their first friendly football fixture of the year. Our Y3/4 team played brilliantly to win 8-2, whilst the Y4/5 team won what was a very tight and tense game, 2-1. All players were exceptional, playing well together as a team, with some moments of brilliance to score a number of goals.

Attention now turns to intra-school sports competitions as we get closer to the finals! (Y3- Football,Y4 – Basketball, Y5/6 – Badminton)
